The land of the bluebird, Japanese style woodcut by Bertha Boynton Lum shows two bluebirds flying down from tree with fairy children behind branches, 1916.
Like many other Westerners, by the late 1890s Bertha Boynton Bull had become fascinated by Japanese color woodcuts. Her interest was so strong that she and her husband, Bert F. Lum, took their honeymoon in Japan, where she sought out tools, artists, and information about traditional printmaking practices.
Although Lum's art features both the subject matter and the flat, decorative quality of Asian prints, it has its own distinctive style and was immediately popular with critics and collectors. In 1912 Lum was the only foreign artist to show her woodcuts at Tokyo's Tenth Annual Art Exhibition. She was the first American woman artist to have her work acquired by the British Museum and was one of four silver medal-winners at the prestigious Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915.
